The City of Avalon Fire Department located on Santa Catalina Island was established in 1917 after a major fire leveled most of the city. The department started with volunteers and eventually hired a fulltime Fire Chief.  Currently the department consists of a Fire Chief, 3 Captains, 3 Engineers, 3 Firefighters, and 25 paid call Firefighters. The Avalon Fire Department does not employ paramedics. The L.A. County Fire Department provides lifeguard paramedics for the island as well as the city.
